The President of India via a notification issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs today nominated Ranjan Gogoi to the council of state to fill the vacancy caused because of the retirement of 1 of the nominated members.

Ranjan Gogoi (born 18 November 1954) is an Indian jurist who served because the 46th chief justice of India. His term as chief justice was from 3 October 2018 till 17 November 2019. On 9 November 2019, the five judge bench headed by him delivered the decision in the historical and controversial Ayodhya dispute case. He was nominated to Rajya Sabha by President Kovind on 16th March 2020.

Justice Gogoi, the first person from northeast who was appointed because the chief justice of India on 3rd October 2018, had retired on 17th November 2019.
