Social activist Medha Patkar said on Wednesday that whatever is occurring in Assam is against the democratic values of the country.

Medha Patkar alongside social activist and Magsaysay Award winner Sandeep Pandey visited Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) leader and RTI activist Akhil Gogoi at the Central Jail in Guwahati on February 19.

While addressing a press meet on Wednesday, Patkar mentioned that Akhil Gogoi alongside members of KMSS has haunted several important development works and has always haunted non-violent protests on various issues.

“But today, he has been branded as an anti-national, terrorist, Maoist and has been locked up in jail. this is often injustice of the very best order and within the recent times we’ve seen that across the country, such allegations are leveled against individuals with none proof,” she said adding that the govt isn’t giving space to non-violent protests, which is being seen in Assam too.

She further stated that the opposition to the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) is democratic in Assam as Muslims are targeted under the Act but Hindus have also faced injustice.
