Assam Official Language Act 1960 mandates Assamese language as compulsory inside the Stateof Assam. But it appears to had been not carried out over the commercial enterprise establishments, factory owners and shopkeepers as every billboard, glow signal board and banners are in English, Hindi and Bengali but not Assamese. Regarding the matter, Margherita Regional Student Union visited and eliminated of such banners at Margherita Bazaar and Segunbari location recently.

Rupam Baruah General Secretary of Margherita Regional Student Union stated that AASU has repeatedly served observe to all of the businessmen of Margherita region regarding the signages, but they did not heed to their requests. Hence, they have performed the elimination of such signages themselves. He in addition found that many petty businesses encroached over the footpath were posing problem for the pedestrians and commuters for quite some time now. He, therefore, entreated the Margherita Municipal Board to without delay evacuate the equal in order that the marketplace is without difficulty approachable for the commuters. Business establishments could have to do away with the current signages and deploy new ones inside 10 days failing which strict action might be taken towards such institutions, he added.
