The union law ministry has been working on a cabinet note to prepare a new law after considering the Election Commission’s proposal to give it statutory backing to collect the Aadhaar numbers of new applicants and existing voters to check multiple entries in the electoral rolls.
The ANI reported that the ministry, as in line with sources, is working to amend the Representation of the People Act, 1951 and is anticipated to submit the modificationsbefore the cabinet committee, chaired via Prime Minister Narendra Modi, for its attentionin order that a invoicein this regard should be addedearlier than the parliament.
The amendments to the Representation of the People Act will require residents to link their electoral photograph ID card with the 12-digit Aadhar, while ensuringprivateness protection.
“The ministry is busy in making ready a cupboardnoticeconsidering election feeproposal to tweak the electoral law,” an official, soliciting for anonymity instructed IANS.
